Background
In 1990, the Utah State Legislature designated SR-9 a “State Scenic Byway.” Almost two decades later, a group of committed stakeholders decided to seek national recognition for the road. The Zion Canyon Corridor Council developed a Corridor Management Plan, Interpretive Plan, and Nomination Template in pursuit of National Scenic Byway designation. However, when the NSB Program was defunded in 2012, these plans came to a halt.
In 2019, Congress passed a bill reinvigorating the NSB Program, finally allowing the Zion Regional Collaborative to nominate Zion Scenic Byway to the Program. On February 16, 2021, the Federal Highway Administration announced 49 new designations to the Program, including the Zion Scenic Byway. The ZRC looks forward to exploring the opportunities this designation may bring, in conjunction with its partners.

Corridor Management Plan Update
In fall 2024, the communities on the Zion Scenic Byway began an update of the Corridor Management Plan to address how to protect the unique byway resources, enhance the visitor experience, and maximize the benefits of the byway for gateway communities. The updated plan will help guide priorities and support communities in applying for national scenic byway designation for additional segments, if so desired.
During spring 2025, input from local stakeholders and visitors was gathered to help with this effort through a series of community meetings and an online survey.
